Opener to the 2006 Glenn Beck Christmas Tour. www.tylerdykstra.net ©2006 Mercury Radio Arts, used by permission.

People all over the world celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th. But why is the Nativity marked by gift giving, and was He really born on that day? And just where did the Christmas tree come from? Take an enchanting tour through the history of this beloved holiday and trace the origins of its enduring traditions. Journey back to the earliest celebrations when the infant religion embraced pagan solstice festivals like the Roman Saturnalia and turned them into a commemoration of Jesus’ birth. Learn how Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree to the English-speaking world in 1841, and discover how British settlers in the New World transformed the patron saint of children into jolly old St. Nick. This documentary explores the origin of Christmas and how it came to be the way we know it today. The documentary also incites the thought as to how Christmas is on one hand a result of social, cultural, and political influences (hence somewhat obscuring the apparent purpose of the festival: Christ’s Mass), and on the other hand a influence over people’s lives (particularly consumerism).

  • Imhornydadcomeinside:

@the06bug The true meaning? The true meaning of chrstmas was to survive it and hope that the sun god would return to the dark european north again.

  • the06bug:

@karinmarieblack I think the idea is that man has pretty much corrupted the way we think about the holiday season, and that we’ve lost sight of what the true meaning of the holidays is… love for one another.

I’m a Mormon, so sue me.

  • Scotish223332:

Kittygirl792, what the hell are you saying? I can’t even interpret it.

  • ser132:

The X is actually from the first letter of the Greek Christos. It’s been used as a symbol for Christ since the time of the Romans.

  • jbpaintball:

    It’s all so true, unfortunately…

  • fromNEStoWii:

    so true

  • Leathertoast:

I guess that wasn’t clear. Yes, I was being sarcastic. That’s just the way those P.C. people think.

YOU CAN’T SAY “CHRISTMAS”!!! IT HAS THE WORD “CHRIST” IN IT WHICH MIGHT OFFEND PEOPLE!!! Let’s just call it “X-Mas” instead.

  • Kumosabe:

    MERRY FRICKEN WINTER!!

  • Kevinsufacation:

@jjobie Yeah cuz they can’t handle the truth/reality.

  • jumbalaya15:

Just because I criticize this doesn’t mean I have any dogma attached to me, history channel is just a joke for serious inquiry.

  • jumbalaya15:

First of all thanks for replying to a comment left a year ago, and secondly I have researched this holiday. My family not once brought me to church, I have been an athiest since age 15, an agnostic since age 6 before that, what shell?? I have been reading on religion the past three years, historical, philosophical, anthropological, and evolutinary perspectives. Read for reserach, don’t watch fucking television. This is just infotainment not serious research, don’t be so intelluctually shallow.

  • tubadawg1:

    Mardi Gras?? LOL
    What a great comparison!

  • jjobie:

    Whoa…what???

  • jjobie:

I think he was speaking geographically moreseo than ethnically; a better way of putting it would have been to say St. Nick was from the area now known as Turkey…

  • jjobie:

It’s funny how upset people get by historical facts sometimes, isn’t it?

  • jjobie:

Other way around, sort of…the Restoration of the Monarchy enabled the restoration of Christmas as a holiday; but the damage was already done by that point.

  • jjobie:

    And then you grew up….

  • jjobie:

Hey Jumbalaya – you best get out of your shell and go dig up the facts for yourself, cause the stuff you’ve been spoon-fed since childhood may not be the truth after all.

  • jjobie:

You are living proof of the old axiom that the only “true religion” is the one YOU believe in.

Feel free to join the rest of civilization in the 21st Century any time you’re ready.

  • jjobie:

Your truth is not Truth for all, no matter how badly you want to believe it, and no matter who tells you it is.

Satan and his Demons? Heh. Yes, I’ve read that comic book too.

  • Socoolscienceshow:

I refues to celebrate Christmas and instead replace it with an updated version of the pagan holiday “Yuletide” where we dont celelbrate fictional charectors that a cult leader created so they could scare people into giving them thier money.

But hey some people are stupid and will belive any bullsh*t story they are told when they are scared or tricked into believing lies. THERE LIES!!!!!! YOU LIEING CHRISTIAN BASTURDS!!!! Shame on all of you!! You make me sick!!

  • lashad1:

I love how modern Christians dis-associate themselves from Pagans yet adopted so many things from them

  • scotth602:

Puritians are now known as Republicans.

  • acerb45666555:

5:08…………the great culture clash! these….Puritans, ran head on into folks who had a much more liberal view of things! they hung natives for witch craft! they used natives as slaves, the ridiculed theyre music, looks, clothes, and beliefs, conflict came within months of the Plymouth Rock deal. in one fight, 65 Puritan men were rubbed out. it was soon a case of total war. and mutual hate and mistrust except in very rare cases.

  • rockking05:

people in the middles ages sing weird an d stuff

  • KrisMTL:

I agree, I love their holiday videos.

  • TheFallchild336:

I am Pagan and I really appreciate the History Channel for making the history of holiday’s more known, at least to some degree. Yule (aka Christmas) really WAS and IS a time that pulled everyone together. A time of joy and celebration of coming life, with longer days ahead (the birth of the SUN turned convieniently into the birth of the SON). I love the evergreen’s representation of lasting life and hope during the the dark times of winter. Merry Yule to everyone!

  • lamboflife1:

I would be very interested to know how the
ana baptist, waldenses or other early believers that brought forth the word of truth to modern day believers would have thought about believers fighting over a worldly holiday like we do. come out from among them and be ye separate. I grew up celebrating Christmas, but in the last few years the Lord has reveled a lot of scripture to me that makes me question these worldy ties. the tree, wreath, commercialism. why seek ye the living among the dead.

  • mxstilgar:

It’s amazing how many “Shout Down” people that speak the Truth.

Six Negative views of EKB99’s comment ?

Satan and his demons work very quickly around here through a lot of you.

  • wreathofpalmaria:

    Mind your own business.

  • mxstilgar:

    This PAGAN holiday, you mean?
