unfortunately, i think christmas is just a feel-good pageant. this picture shows my brother handing out some small gifts to my family of things that we need, like socks and gloves and generic soap and the like. we decided to give money to charity instead this year, and give inexpensive or handmade gifts to each other. my brother picked big brothers and sisters of america, my dad picked the cleveland mission, my mom picked the red cross, and i picked the united negro college fund. i feel a supreme amount of guilt on days like today, because i know how easy my life is, because i live in america, i’m white, and my parents are wealthy enough to have the luxury of actually giving money away. my entire life is easy, my entire life is simple. i know everyone experiences pain and sadness but i feel like mine are probably less legitimate than those with what i consider real, actual problems. i don’t know how to legitimize my own troubles to myself without feeling really guilty.
